Egg laying is commonly seen in female pet birds even when a male bird is not present. It occurs when the female bird becomes sexually bonded to her owner. Some species, such as cockatiels and eclectus, are hard wired to lay eggs and are especially prone to this behavior. Once egg laying begins, it is difficult to break the cycle. When too many eggs or immature eggs are laid, it become important to provide nutritional support to prevent egg peritonitis and other life threatening problems associated with egg laying. The egg laying nutritional program provides this support and is used whenever egg laying behavior occurs.

Once an episode of an ovary or egg laying problem has been experienced, we use this program to provide the nutrition necessary for egg production and to prevent further problems. It should also be introduced whenever egg laying behavior is suspected. The early signals of egg laying include chewing branches, going to the floor, looking for nesting places, or other behavioral changes such as tail lifting or sexual activity. Introduce the Egg Laying Nutritional Program at the first signs of this behavior and continue for 4 weeks. In some birds it may be necessary to continue for 6 weeks.

When early egg laying signals are seen, the behavior should also be discouraged by moving the cage to another room or putting your bird in a different area where they do not feel it is safe to lay eggs. Turing off or reducing heating during winter may also be beneficial in halting egg laying behavior and thereby preventing the opportunity for egg laying problems to arise.
