Owl Finch - Finch Species
Articles and Information
Name: Owl (Bicheno) Finch (Poephila bichenovi)
Origin: Eastern Australia
Habitat: Woodland with a grassy undergrowth, but have been found in the cities near scrub and on cultivated land as parks and gardens.
Sexing: Small visual difference. The male stands taller than the female. It has been suggested that the individuals with wider chest-bars and are brighter face masks and chests are usually the male.
Breeding: Moderate. Pair requires a lot of space to fly, a safe place to hide the nest, and a very good balanced diet.
Social: Yes. Among their own species and in a mixed flight.
Housing: The Owl Finch does well in either a flight cage or aviary setting. They thrive in either small colonies or mixed flights with finches of equal size and temperament. This species spends much of its time on the ground scratching and looking for insects.
Diet: Owl finches will thrive on a standard finch mix, cuttlebone, oyster shell, fresh water. I give my Owl Finch a variety of sprouted seeds( a blend of alfalfa, broccoli, cauliflower, Canola, Kale, Mustard Greens, Red Clover, Radish, Sunflower, Collards and Turnip) plus a mixture of Popeye mix, greens, egg food and small meal worms. They are fairly eager to try new food. Also plenty of good Spray Millet.
